“If you decide to go the route of reports through any tax engine like Avalara, Vertex, TaxJar, TaxCloud, CereTax, etc. You would have to pay or the client would have to pay to have their tax engine calculate the transactions, so there is an additional cost besides just the returns to get the data in a report that isn't all that much better to file tax returns manually.”

“Actually, the CPA firm is filing the returns manually using reports exported from the software. This client uses Netsuite; neither Avalara nor TaxJar works with Netsuite. Netsuite produces a report with sales, credits, and sales tax collected and refunded by shipping location.”

“Only set taxjar up for the states you have nexus in. Those are the only states you should be collecting tax in. You don’t want to collect tax in a state if you don’t have a sales tax permit, because you’ll have no way to pay the collected tax to the states.”
“Pass on TaxJar. Sales Tax Nexus is determined by the volume of sales and $ taken in on a state by state basis. Better to just run it by your accountant or your accounting software.”

They will track sales volumes, notify when thresholds are hit in various jurisdictions, and basically make it easier for you to put together the data / reports needed to do the filing. Registering in specific jurisdictions, etc., is still you responsibility.”
“My wife uses TaxJar and there is currently some glitch that is showing she's doing like 5-10x the business she's actually doing, and they are overcharging her by a ton. There is no way to contact them outside of emails without the pro subscription (which is $100 a month), and they are not responding to emails.”
