“My specific issue with TaxJar is that it does not calculate Colorado home rule city sales tax. That makes it completely useless to me. I currently combine and file manually but I'm also looking for software that can help me.”

“You’d still have to pay their monthly transaction ingestion costs which are not exactly cheap depending on the volume of transactions your client has to each month, if it would save you probably $40/filing to do it on your own.”
fourdayworkweek · reddit ·
“If you decide to go the route of reports through any tax engine like Avalara, Vertex, TaxJar, TaxCloud, CereTax, etc. You would have to pay or the client would have to pay to have their tax engine calculate the transactions, so there is an additional cost besides just the returns to get the data in a report that isn't all that much better to file tax returns manually.”

“As an alternative, I am considering signing up for one of those tools (TaxJar, TaxCloud or similar) but I also do not love their autofile pricing at $50 per return. All these tools state that they generate reports that you can use to file returns yourself.”

“Free options like WooCommerce Tax can work, but for real international compliance, tools like Quaderno, TaxJar, or TaxCloud make it easy to calculate, collect, and report VAT/sales tax without all the headache.”

“I ran into the same wall with taxjar once we were in multiple states. Remittance accuracy, cert management and unpredictable pricing were the biggest headaches. Ended up moving to taxwire too”
mykeeb85 · reddit ·
“I hear you as once you are collecting in dozens of states, the limitations of taxjar get pretty glaring. For me, remittance accuracy, certificate management and predictable pricing were the deal-breakers.”
mwatter1333 · reddit ·
“Taxjar is fine for remittance but once you are in 30+ states it doesnt scale and certificate compliance is weak. Avalara felt like bringing in an ERP.”
Pacrockett · reddit ·
“Might be worth checking out Zamp (https://zamp.com/) it's designed to be an accurate, more scalable alternative to tools like TaxJar and Avalara. They handle everything from calculations, filings, registrations, exemption certificate management, onboarding, and dedicated account support, all for one monthly price.”

“Stay away from Avalara and TaxJar.”
jiejenn · reddit ·
“TaxJar in my experience is similar to yours… just limited. Avalara is a wicked powerful”
ilikeadam · reddit ·
“Currently using TaxJar, but it feels very limited — basic remittance features, not much support around exemption certificate management, and not super scalable as we grow.”

“Last quarter was my first time using TaxJar to file sales tax. I have Shopify’s automated tax collection enabled, but on the due date, I got an email from Shopify saying they couldn’t access my state tax account to file—even though TaxJar had already filed and paid it.”
ExistingAmount · reddit ·
“You're spot on, using Stripe + tools like Quaderno, Avalara, or TaxJar can help calculate taxes, but filing and remitting them across dozens of countries/states? That’s still on you and most accountants only cover their local jurisdiction unless you hire a global tax specialist.”
Admirable_Rate_8648 · reddit ·
“if you're happy with the pricing with taxjar, vertex will be far out of budget.”
dogfather75 · reddit ·
“But to my shock, when I testing it, I realized it returns inaccurate rates quite often (even for the validated addresses). I compared the rates returned by TaxJar to the ones by AvaTax and manually checked on the state tax lookup tools etc and in few addresses, TaxJar is off by 1.5-2%!”

“I’m looking for a sales tax software to refer to clients, and i’d like to get a pretty decent idea on what they should be expecting for pricing. I’m going to call tomorrow and talk to a sales member, but just wanting to hear from anyone with experience a little bit about how their pricing works.”

“TaxJar would love for you to believe you need to but it should be obvious why.”

“TaxJar extension - disconnected and reconnected to get it working for automatic sales tax rates”

“My firm works with them (as well as Sovos, Vertex, Avalara, Numeral, and TaxJar).”
Cbagneato · reddit ·
“If you are under 50 mil then taxjar could be better but I don't think they can do local returns only state.”
Personal_Abies_1733 · reddit ·
“TaxJar is also popular. How is their customer service? Can they handle a multi-million dollar company with returns filed monthly in almost every state?”
Gullible_Scratch9060 · reddit ·
“Actually, the CPA firm is filing the returns manually using reports exported from the software. This client uses Netsuite; neither Avalara nor TaxJar works with Netsuite. Netsuite produces a report with sales, credits, and sales tax collected and refunded by shipping location.”
Dem_Joints357 · reddit ·
“TaxJar seems very cheap compared to Avalara and Zamp but I can't tell what is lurking beneath the surface. But it got me thinking what sales tax solution we actually *need*...”
Tandem_Jump · reddit ·
“TaxJar is what I’ve set up some clients with and it works well, but I believe it’s quite expensive. I can’t remember how much they charge, but I do remember it’s quite a bit.”
mqrager · reddit ·
“I am using TaxJar extension and I am wondering how will the taxes be reported if TaxJar uses 0% on a CA sales tax.”
learningstufferrday · reddit ·
“The Taxjar/Autotask integration works pretty well. It helps reduce compliance risk to a certain point and automatically updates the tax rates.”

“Avalara OR Taxjar? Our sales tax service is coming up for renewal and I am wondering if anyone has an opinion about these two?”

“Any improvement with taxjar?”

“It’s not like we are a partner with Taxjar. Just a suggestion based upon our existing customers 😊”

“Taxjar is basically dead for a very good reason.”
wwwwhhhaaattt · reddit ·
“Taxjar has been, essentially, obsoleted/deprecated at this point. They don’t even advertise as a NetSuite partner anymore.”
MBTHM · reddit ·
“Only set taxjar up for the states you have nexus in. Those are the only states you should be collecting tax in. You don’t want to collect tax in a state if you don’t have a sales tax permit, because you’ll have no way to pay the collected tax to the states.”
Zestyclose_Ground626 · reddit ·
“Hello, I am trying to set up a website for my small business and am trying to figure out the TaxJar extension for sales tax.”
FatBoySilver · reddit ·
“Pass on TaxJar. Sales Tax Nexus is determined by the volume of sales and $ taken in on a state by state basis. Better to just run it by your accountant or your accounting software.”
ParadoxObscuris · reddit ·
“Question on Tax Management services like Taxjar. Are they recommended?”
Monkfrootx · reddit ·
“I wanted to look into TaxJar but i heard they were no longet offering the accountant pro subscription”
MissFinance · reddit ·
“I am very close to just abandoning Stripe/Taxjar altogether and working with a different payment processor.”
PlatformDish7356 · reddit ·
“However, if you just have one tax nexus, TaxJar or WooCommerce Shipping & Tax should be sufficient.”
wskv · reddit ·
“I know from a friend who has an e-commerce store on another platform that TaxJar has been huge from them but I wasn't liking the WooCommerce based reviews and links I was seeing and was browsing sales tax threads in this subreddit and saw Avalara mentioned. Avalara's AvaTax has great ratings.”
MikeD1982 · reddit ·
“TaxJar / Avalara / Quaderno will not handle tax filing. They will track sales volumes, notify when thresholds are hit in various jurisdictions, and basically make it easier for you to put together the data / reports needed to do the filing. Registering in specific jurisdictions, etc., is still you responsibility.”
Asleep-Economist2384 · reddit ·
“Use Stripe + Sales Tax solution like TaxJar / Avalara / Quarderno.”
AilenEverill · reddit ·
“My wife uses TaxJar and there is currently some glitch that is showing she's doing like 5-10x the business she's actually doing, and they are overcharging her by a ton. There is no way to contact them outside of emails without the pro subscription (which is $100 a month), and they are not responding to emails.”
loserfame · reddit ·
“I used TaxJar to replace all my headaches. I am in NY and NY is a destination - based state, so I have to charge every state that I ship to.”
SolarSystem2017 · reddit ·
“With the number of transactions we do, TaxJar would cost us approximately $170/quarter. Is the process really, really *that* much easier with TaxJar? 15% cheaper is sorta convincing but I'd hope there's a bit of automation that makes the task easier for me as well.”
