Perplexity

An answer engine that searches the live web and cites its sources

Perplexity is a conversational search engine: you ask a question in plain language and it searches the live web, writes an answer, and cites the pages it drew from so each claim can be checked against the source. Beyond single questions there is Deep Research, which runs an iterative search loop and returns a longer report, and Spaces, which keep the threads and files of one piece of ongoing work together. Comet is its Chromium-based browser for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with an assistant in the sidebar that can read the page you are on and act across open tabs rather than one at a time. Paid plans route questions to frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI rather than to a single house model. A separate API platform sells the same web-grounded search to developers, with Search, Agent, Router and Embeddings endpoints. It is used as a replacement for a general search engine by people who want the citation trail rather than a page of links.

  • Cited sources on every answer, linked back to the page
  • Deep Research runs an iterative search loop into a report
  • Spaces keep the threads and files of one project together
  • Comet, a Chromium browser with an assistant in the sidebar
  • The assistant acts across open tabs, not just one page
  • Paid plans route to frontier models from several providers
  • Labs produces presentations, spreadsheets and mini apps
  • Search, Agent, Router and Embeddings APIs for developers

What is Perplexity best used for compared to other AI tools?

People describe it as a specialized research assistant that excels at synthesizing information from the live web and providing cited references. While some users find it superior for news and research, others note that tools like Claude or ChatGPT are better suited for reasoning, code review, and long-form drafting.

Why are some users unhappy with the current pricing and subscription model?

Users express frustration over the perceived declining value of the Pro subscription, the requirement to pay extra for 'Computer' credits, and the fact that the platform sometimes defaults to these paid features without clear notice. Some also note that other services now offer more competitive features for the same price.

How does the performance and reliability of Perplexity compare to its competitors?

Opinions are divided; some users report that the service has become slower, buggier, and less accurate over time, with instances of random language switching or ungrounded answers. Others argue that it remains a top-tier tool for search, though some feel it has fallen behind in model quality and infrastructure compared to frontier models.

“I do this today on ChatGPT-Claude-Perplexity but unfortunately Apple HealthKit access is super flaky and”

“Perplexity in particular will sometimes return an answer that isn't grounded in any retrieval. It reads like a normal response.”
EffectiveElk2703 · reddit ·
“Stop researching and start testing, open ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini yourself and ask the actual questions your customers would ask, see if you show up and who does, that 30 minutes tells you more than another week of reading conflicting advice.”
SE0artist · reddit ·
“I do have self hosted SearXNG, it still can't match the perplexity in term of scrapping and deep research the web for knowledge, latest details.”
makoto_snkw · reddit ·
“Perplexity is my number 1 favourite “ai” tool. I emulate it with my Hermes agent by pairing SearXNG and Vane which is alright”
SandStorm1863 · reddit ·
“Perplexity is a search product with a model attached, so it wins when the answer lives in documents you have not read yet. Claude wins when the material is already in front of it and the work is reasoning over it, which is what code review and long-form drafting actually are.”
NeuralNomad87 · reddit ·
“This platform is dogshite now.”

“I would then test these questions using ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews/AI Mode and Perplexity, among others. Then, look at which companies are being mentioned, which sources are being used, and what those companies are doing differently.”
RightCamel3583 · reddit ·
“Ask each one on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI mode. Write down two separate things: did it say your name, and did it link your site.”

“why pay $20 for perplexity when i can pay $20 for claude”

“I wonder how Perplexity feels right now about ChatGpt Astra’s computer use. It’s cheaper— more token efficient and ‘scarier’ than the former.”
OleleSalvador · x ·
“ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity don't cite sources the same way.”
sengineland · x ·
“Perplexity is a full research engine built for depth and accuracy.”
AndrewBolis · x ·
“Write 40 prompts a real buyer would actually type, hit the OpenAI, Gemini and Perplexity APIs on a weekly cron, and log three things per run: brand mentioned yes/no, where in the answer, and which sources got cited. Costs a few dollars a month.”

“we recently started using Shiprocket AITLAS, and its been surprisingly useful. instead of just tracking Google rankings, it shows how our brand appears across ChatGPt, Gemini, Google AI overviews, AI mode, and perplexity, seeing the actual AI responses made a huge difference.”
DetectiveAncient2578 · reddit ·
“Its still better than gemini native app for me, in terms of quality of output and keeping context. But it's restricted in terms of usage. I miss what perplexity used to be!”
Aggravating_Band_353 · reddit ·
“Perplexity tried ads and quit. Google won't put them in Gemini.”
Suryanshti777 · x ·
“I tried perplexity after 1.5 years away it sucks will not continue to use.”
exploradorobservador · reddit ·
“I'd start by running 20 to 30 buyer questions with no brand name in them ("best X for Y", "X alternatives") through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and tracking three things per prompt: are you named, is your URL actually cited, and who shows up instead. Do that on a schedule, because a one-off check goes stale in a week.”
Anxious_Situation_60 · reddit ·
“That’s helpful, but it still won’t show every brand mention, the exact questions people asked or what’s happening on ChatGPT and Perplexity.”
Salty_Force_9339 · reddit ·
“Anfänglich fand ich Perplexity klasse, solide Ergebnisse, dann die Paypal-Aktion - 1 Jahr kostenlos. Aber: In dieser Zeit wurden die Ergebnisse immer schlechter im Vergleich zu Claude oder Google Gemini. Inzwischen ist Perplexity von meinem Desktop verschwunden und ich nutze überwiegend Claude und Gemini.”
Aldosteron · reddit ·
“Perplexity is just a harness for better AI. It had its time, but ChatGPT and Claude don’t really need harnesses like Perplexity anymore. So why still use essentially a watered down version?”
