Hugging Face

The hub where open machine learning models and datasets are hosted

Hugging Face runs the Hub, the place most open machine learning models and datasets are published, versioned and downloaded from. Repositories are Git-based, so models and datasets are cloned, branched and pull-requested like code, and a dataset viewer lets you inspect data in the browser before pulling it. Spaces host runnable demos built with Gradio or Docker, including GPU-backed ones through ZeroGPU. Alongside hosting it sells inference: Inference Providers routes calls to third-party model hosts, and Inference Endpoints deploys a model to dedicated infrastructure. Team and Enterprise plans add SSO, audit logs, resource groups, storage region control and SCIM provisioning, and storage is billed per terabyte with egress and CDN included.

  • Git-based repositories for models, datasets and Spaces
  • Dataset viewer for inspecting data in the browser
  • Spaces host runnable demos built with Gradio or Docker
  • ZeroGPU gives Spaces GPU compute with a usage quota
  • Inference Providers routes calls to third-party model hosts
  • Inference Endpoints deploys a model to dedicated infrastructure
  • SSO, audit logs, resource groups and storage region control
  • Per-terabyte storage pricing, with egress and CDN included

What is the primary purpose of Hugging Face?

Hugging Face serves as a central hub for discovering, downloading, and sharing open-source machine learning models and datasets. It functions similarly to GitHub for AI, providing a repository for model artifacts and offering features like Spaces for running and comparing model demos.

What concerns do users have regarding the platform's neutrality and future?

Many users express concern that an acquisition by a hardware manufacturer could compromise the platform's neutrality. Some fear that the platform might prioritize optimization for specific hardware, restrict access to certain types of models, or shift toward a more restrictive, enterprise-focused business model. Conversely, some suggest that the platform's value lies in its utility and that if it were to change negatively, the community would quickly migrate to alternatives or use decentralized methods like torrents.

How do users perceive the reliability and security of the platform?

The platform's security has been questioned following reports of cyberattacks and unauthorized access to its infrastructure. Some users have raised concerns about the potential for version control to be manipulated or for malicious changes to be introduced to the platform without detection.

What are the common criticisms regarding the platform's usability and business model?

Users have noted that the internal search functionality is not easy to use. Regarding its business model, some observers question the sustainability of the platform's current approach, noting that it is often viewed as a file hosting service and questioning whether it can remain profitable without significant changes to its billing or subscription structures.

“Hugging face is a repository of ai codes, are you saying another entity can modify those source code without being detected? As in version control can be faked?”
ThePorko · reddit ·
“One of the learnings from the Hugging Face hack however is that there are emerging para-social dynamics in the thing we call "AI". The reality is that the power of these models is not in the models themselves, but rather their application through harnesses.”

“If Nvidia tries anything funny with access / reviews / restrictions, alternatives will pop up basically overnight and that will be the end of hugging face.”
Acrobatic-Flan-5085 · reddit ·
“Of course we need a new alternative, Nvidia has a history of anti-competitive and monopolistic practices, that was one the reason why they blocked then from buying the ARM, now think about how hugging face helped nvidia competitors make llms work without cuda and how nvidia didn't liked this.”
mawkzin · reddit ·
“It depends on what they do with it, if they continue to play neutral with open weights hosting on hf or indirectly or directly affect that running them locally.”

“Majority of the models on hugging face are not Nvidia... If Huggingface was altered in any negative way... they would just post the models on Github... come on....”

“Nvidia is an awesome company. Hugging face will just get better”

“Hugging Face has basically become the default place for discovering, downloading and sharing open models and datasets. But with NVIDIA potentially owning such an important part of the open-source AI ecosystem, I'm wondering if this changes how people perceive it.”

“If they put a subscription on it, people will just create a new site and upload the models there”
JangoDarkSaber · reddit ·
“Let's say If Nvidia owns the biggest hub for open weight models, that's also a huge lot of where agentic tooling gets built and distributed. A lot of the newer scraping and browser automation agents are built on top of open models pulled straight from Hugging Face, fine tuned for navigation, form filling, CAPTCHA reasoning, that kind of thing.”

“Hugging face is a social network?”

“It’s not unusual that Artifactory could connect to Hugging Face. What’s unusual is that they stripped safeguards from their software to see if it would become malware and maximized the “blast radius” through gross negligence.”
